**Why is this pedigree important??**

Please take time to read this. Pedigree follows below.

Hildie was my first dachshund...my first dog. When I purchased her in 1988 I thought I was being clever to ask about Champions in the pedigree. "Yes," the breeder assured me, "there are quite a few." So I decided to order a professionally prepared, 8 generation pedigree. And yes, the breeder had been truthful...there were indeed Champions in my little dog's pedigree. I was very proud.

What I didn't understand at the time was that to be of any "value" at all, the Champions should appear within the first few generations...certainly not 6 or 7 generations back.

"Why bother with Champions at all?" you might ask.

Well, a Champion title signifies that a dog has been examined by several judges, according to the Standard of the breed, and has been found to be worthy of awarding Championship points. This is more than just a "beauty contest"... it is a measure of the dog's soundness, structure (very important), and overall wellness and temperment. It is NOT, as some backyard and commercial breeders claim, snobbery. If there had been Champions in the first one or two generations of Hildie's pedigree, she might well have been a healthy dog--and not one with multiple health problems, most importantly her back problems. And while there is never an "absolute guarantee" that you will have a 100% healthy dog (even from a show breeder), at least you are certain that they are trying to maintain a high standard for correct structure, health, and temperament. You raise your odds of getting a healthy pet astronomically.

As you study the pedigree, note that there is only one Champion in 5 generations... a miniature wire dog in the 5th generation. All the other Champions occur in the 6th and 7th generations, and are a strange mix of standards and miniatures, wires and smooths. The Show Breeders back in the 6th & 7th generations were following careful breeding practices--line breeding certain excellent dogs within a size, in other words, miniature to miniature, standard to standard, and only very, very seldom mixing coat varieties (a practice which should ONLY be done by the most skillful of breeders). Mixing of sizes and of coats frequently produces dachshunds that are incorrect according to the Breed Standard. This is unfortunately a common practice among commercial and backyard breeders...some even boast that they have created a "new" or "rare" variety of dachshund! What they have created instead is POOR QUALITY! Please recognize that...don't be fooled.

Hildie's pedigree is a victim of what I term "pedigree decay." She can count among her ancestors some truly great dogs in the breed. Carelessness on the part of good breeders (or deceptiveness among their puppy buyers) caused ensuing generations to be bred with less and less care--and probably in a few puppymills (based on some of the names... Red IX, Dashie Red). This is not a good life for any dog. The dogs closest to the front of the pedigree, though they might have been well-loved pets, were obviously unsuited for breeding by virtue of their poor structure and health.

Hildie's sire had a known back problem. He should never have been bred. He should have been a happy, NEUTERED pet.

Hildie could have just as easily been born from Champion parents had she been bred with care. She should NOT have been bred at all based on the reality of her pedigree. Don't be swayed by a breeder telling you that there are one or two Champions in your dog's pedigree. They are ONLY valuable and meaningful if they occur in the first 2 to 3 generations.

It cost me more for Hildie (my $150 newspaper puppy) over the course of her lifetime, than for all of my other dogs combined to date. Those were bought from successful, careful, breeders. Be sure to look at the other pedigrees on my site to see how very different they are from what you will see below.
